East End Film Festival #3 - Make Your Own Damn Art

I had the opportunity to watch John Rogers' intriguing documentary about artist Bob and Roberta Smith at the Aubin Cinema yesterday. The film follows Bob and Roberta over the course of three years and provides a fascinating insight into the work and philosophy of one of Britain's humbler artists. The camera work and general production quality are a little patchy, although this perhaps fits well with Bob and Roberta's own aesthetic, but ultimately content is key and it wins over with its fine portrayal of Bob's endearingly eccentric life.

Make Your Own Damn Art is a good reminder that art doesn't have to be about big galleries and events for the elite, or indeed large and expensive public sculptures, but it is something that we all have the capacity to make and enjoy. Interestingly this point is highlighted by the fact that the only moments that the film didn't really need were those featuring curators attempting to add  a conceptual legitimacy to Bob's work that clearly stood out of its own accord.
