East End Film Festival #4

Unfortunately I missed this one as I was ill but on Sunday 1st July my good friends Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard premiered the final 3 films from their ambitious 4 year project with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Do you love me like I love you. These films are superbly insightful documentaries produced to accompany the re-release of the entire back catalogue of the band and are composed of beautifully minimal talking heads interviews of friends, fans and musicians discussing their experiences with the bands  music. The premiered films cover the albums Nocturama (2003), Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus (2004) and Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! (2008). Each of the 14 films tells the compelling story of an individual album and weaves together the experiences of each person to produce a wider narrative. They are an absolute must see for any fans of Nick Cave and also a truly original documentary format. The clip below is from the previous release of albums and features clips from each of the documentaries Let Love In (1994), Murder Ballads (1996), The Boatman's Call (1997) and No More Shall We Part (2001).

Alongside this Iain and Jane have also curated Mass Production a video lounge featuring videos that span four decades and explore ideas of documentary and portraiture. John Smith, William Raban and Liliane Lijn are just some of the artists featured in this show. The lounge is hosted at Vibe Bar on Brick Lane and will run during the course of the Film Festival. Well worth a visit if you have the chance!
